Asbestos abatement is necessary only for renovation, maintenance or remodeling. It is also necessary during an emergency when asbestos material has been accidentally disturbed.

Not every material like pipe, ceiling or floor tile contains asbestos in it. It is not visible to a naked eye and samples have to be collected for analysis. The samples are analyzed under a microscope in the EHS laboratory.

Asbestos abatement is performed by isolating the area around the operation to prevent the fibers to escape to the environment. The workers wear special suits and respirators to protect themselves while working. To further prevent attached fibers to escape to the surrounding air, the suits are disposed off properly after each procedure.

After an abatement project is completed, air samples are taken and analyzed under a phase contrast microscope. After the test results are confirmed to be "clean", the warning signs are removed and the area is ready for occupation. If the test results show signs of asbestos, the second abatement operation is performed to correct the problem.
